We’ve recapped each speaker’s presentation so that we can offer these insights to all of our ActivaLearn readers. Keep reading to learn how you can make the transition to a smaller space! For part two, we’re addressing how to declutter and get organized for your move.

With less square footage, condo storage needs to be smart!

Get Organized

Ange McNamara, of Klear Inc., gave some useful tips on how to manage the rightsizing process. She recognizes that people rightsizing to a smaller condo have lived in their home for 20+ years and have accumulated a lifetime of memories (and stuff).

Sorting through years of accumulation seems overwhelming when you look at the sheer scope of the project. Going through decades of treasures can be staggering and definitely overwhelming, but working with a professional organizer can help make the process as stress-free as possible!

By taking clients through the home one space at a time, a professional organizer makes the task seem much less daunting. To start, they meet up with the homeowners to chat, and then working together, they come up with a plan and schedule. Once everyone’s on the same page, it’s time to get to work!

Whether you’re working with a professional like Ange, or are braving it on your own, the process can be the same:

  1. Pick a place to start
  2. Sort items into keep, donate, valuables, and trash piles (or boxes!)
  3. Remove the items (Ange does this for all of her clients, but you can use a garbage removal company or do it yourself!)

Have a garage sale to help declutter!

Remember: don’t put any pressure on yourself during the sort – don’t trash something meaningful just because you think you’re “supposed to”! Ask yourself these questions when you’re sorting:

  • Do I love it?
  • Do I need it?
  • Do I use it?
  • Will I use it?

The next step is taking a look through your items and consider what you might want to sell. A professional organizer can help you connect with an appraiser or auctioneer to determine value, but you can also use online avenues like Kijiji or Facebook Marketplace. If you have a lot to sell, it may be worth considering an estate sale!

When it comes to moving, you likely know the options like hiring movers, renting a truck, or calling in friends and family for backup, but did you know that a professional organizer can take care of the entire move for you? For her clients, Ange will pack, move and unpack your home, leaving nothing except the paperwork to sign.

Whether you need help decluttering or help with the full process, there are professionals available to make your rightsizing move a stress-free experience!
