The KW Region is traced with many trails, but we’ve managed to shortlist 4 of our favourites. Enjoy a stroll in the woods on a sunny day at one of these beautiful spots – who knew the city was so close to such natural beauty?

1. The Walter Bean Grand River Trail

Not far from the hustle and bustle of the city is a beautiful 17km long trail that winds through a picturesque landscape along the Grand River. Running through Cambridge, Kitchener and Waterloo, The Walter Bean Grand River Trail has several access points allowing you to personalize your hike to be the distance you want. Some access points to note are RIM Park in Waterloo, Pioneer Tower in Kitchener and Walter Bean Trailhead in Cambridge. You can also find trail access points near our Trailside, Riverwood and River Ridge communities! No matter your location on the trail, you are sure to see the Grand River in all of its glory.

2. Huron Natural Area

Just outside of our picturesque Huron Village community is Kitchener’s largest and most valuable natural space: Huron Natural Area. Here you will find scenic hiking trails that wind through provincially significant wetlands, forests and meadows. Walk along the boardwalk that wraps around a small pond or cycle your way through one of many trails the area offers; there truly is something for everyone at Huron Natural Area.

3. Laurel Creek Conservation Area Trail

Relax and unwind from city living without actually leaving! Located just minutes from Reflections at Laurelwood (and our future conservation meadows community) is Laurel Creek Conservation Area. Enjoy nature at its finest on one of the three loops of multi-use trails that travel through a mature forest and tall grassy meadows. If you’re looking for an oasis in the middle of the city, Laurel Creek Conservation Area is the place for you!

4. West Side Trails

Find solitude at West Side Trails, also known as the Geo-Time Trail! This hidden gem near our Vista Hills community is the largest woodland in Waterloo. These trails feature educational signage along the route that will teach you about biological organisms and when major catastrophic events took place on earth! You can also learn how to tell time with a sundial located on one of the paths. Trails here vary from steep hills to wider trails with a more gradual incline. Here you are sure to see wetlands, rare plants and a variety of wildlife.  Keep your eyes peeled, some have even reported seeing fossils in the area!
